Kids play kitchen sets have been around forever and are a great pretend play experience. Young chefs in training can make believe they are cooking up meals just like mom and dad.  I’ve found boys and girls equally enjoy playing with them.  I had 3 boys and bought one (albeit many years ago) for my first child and all of them loved playing in the kitchen for many years.  These days there are a lot more choices and they have much improved features.  In fact there may be so many choices you can’t decide which one to buy.

I’ve taken a look at them online and assembled in the toy stores while researching a good model for my grandsons.  Ultimately the one I like the best is the KidKraft Uptown Espresso Kitchen.  It’s modern finish looks like my own stainless steel appliance kitchen and it’s a good size.  Some brands – including some other KidKraft models were way too small or huge.  This is a good medium fit for their bedroom/playroom at my house. And it’s not pink.  The look of stainless is a nice gender neutral effect.

Some of the nice features that are included are a pretend phone, an ice maker that you can fit a toy glass in for making drinks, a bar to hang a kitchen towel, a real chalkboard for notes, shopping lists, and “recipes”, and a cutting board in one of the cabinets.  All of the doors open and close securely and the compartments are big enough to hold most play food and cookware. The countertop is a speckled color, much like my Corian counters at home.  It’s pretty realistic looking and I like the retro faux tiles on the backsplash.   It may even end up in my dining room where the kids can play while I’m making dinner.  It looks like this play kitchen is very high quality and will hold up to lot of rough play.

Some of the online reviews state that this model takes quite a while to assemble. And it definitely is best to have 2 people assist in putting it together.  This seems to be the common complaint from reviewers on Amazon.  I’ve found some videos online that show parts of the process.  I think it’s probably a matter of getting very organized and having an uninterrupted block of time to devote to the process. The instructions look like they are mostly pictures which seem to be very common nowadays.  I prefer written instructions but like I said, I’ll just have to go step by step.

Here are some KidKraft food and cookware choices to go with the KidKraft Uptown Espresso Kitchen.

I didn't have many toys of my own as a child but after having 4 kids, 3 step-kids, and 4 grand-kids I've seen and played with a lot of toys. I'm still playing with them every time I get a chance. I've started a doll collection and plan to incorporate a lot of doll information and reviews here, but you will find information on toys of all kinds and for all age groups. That includes adult collectors. I hope you enjoy your visit to Trying Out Toys.
