Disney Infinity Game – Know The Basics Before Buying

Disney Infinity Game

Disney released their interactive Infinity game this past summer in plenty of time to build up momentum for the Christmas gift giving season.  I tried the game out briefly at our local Toys r Us and was instantly smitten.  I didn't buy it though.  I'm hoping it shows up on my grandsons wish list.  But I did get the low down on how it works.

The Infinity Base

The Starter Pack includes the Base which hooks into your Nintendo Wii, Xbox, or Playstation game system.  You have to purchase the type that goes with your gaming system, they are not interchangeable.   There's also a version for the Nintendo DS but it works a bit differently.  I'll focus on the others since they all operate the same way.  The base has spots for a translucent glowing hexagonal Playset Piece, which determines which Disney game or mode you are playing in.  For example the Starter Pack comes with a Playset Piece for Pirates of the Caribbean, The Incredibles, and Monsters University.  When you put a Playset Piece on the Base you are transported into the mode for that Disney franchise.

Infinity Character Figures

There are also 2 spots on the Base for Character Figures that compete in the Playset.  The starter set comes with Captain Jack Sparrow, Sully from Monsters U, and Mr. Incredible.  You can play a single player game with the Starter Pack because only one figure from each franchise is included.  You can purchase additional characters for around $13 that will  add to your play experience.  Two players play on a split screen.   Each figure, or character, has special abilities.   For example Sully can roar to scare his opponents.  While the Base can only be used with the gaming system it supports, the figures can be used on multiple platforms.  Meaning kids can take them to friends houses and play on any type of gaming system.  They can only be used in their particular franchise in Playset Mode though.  You can't combine Sully with Mr. Incredible in a game.

Power Discs

To add dimensions to your game you can add circular or hexagonal Power Discs on the bottom of the figurines that allow you to level up, alter the capabilities or vehicles, and change the terrain.  Each figure can support 2 Power Discs.  You just get one Power Disc in the starter pack.  Additional Power Discs are available in packs of 2 for $5.  The bad news is that you don't know which Power Discs are included in the pack you are buying. I can see a big surge in secondary market sales for these discs as people will end up getting discs they can't use.  That part kind of stinks.

Toy Box Mode

So far I've explained the Playset Mode.  There's another feature that's very unique to this game which is called the Toy Box Mode.  If you don't put a Play Set Piece on the Base you are taken into the Toy Box Mode.  In this scenario you can combine the characters using whatever character figures you have on the Base, and create your own game.  In Toy Box Mode you can play with multiple Character Figures that come with the starter pack - 2 at a time because there are 2 spots to place them on the Base.  And of course the character scenarios become infinite as you purchase more figures.  They called it Toybox Mode because it's like playing in your room with all your different toys.  This mode received great reviews from test groups and industry experts.  Here's a video showing some of the play action.  I didn't get to try this but it looks amazing.

While the Starter Pack is very reasonably priced, I can see spending lots of money on different Character Figurines.  There is a long list already available and more are on the way.  And of course the Power Discs.  I suspect those will be updated and improved for years to come.  The play possibilities will be endless.  If you're interested in purchasing the Starter Pack, Amazon has the most competitive price I've seen.  Here is more information on the Xbox set.  That's the one I'll be buying.  But browse around if you need one of the others.  They're all available.

I'm a Floridian by birth, a Certified Public Accountant by profession, and a toy lover by choice. I've been playing with toys for 55+ years now. I didn't have many toys of my own as a child but after having 4 kids, 3 step-kids, and 4 grand-kids I've seen and played with a lot of toys. I'm still playing with them every time I get a chance. I've started a doll collection and plan to incorporate a lot of doll information and reviews here, but you will find information on toys of all kinds and for all age groups. That includes adult collectors. I hope you enjoy your visit to Trying Out Toys.
